Baby’s First Visit ti a Shrine
The Japanese people take their new-born baby to the Ujigami-sama god, a protecting god, about one month after the baby is born. There, people pray to the god to protect their baby and his or her healthy growth. This is called, o-miya-mairi, a baby’s first visit to a shrine.
Generally, people take a baby boy when he is thirty-two days old and a baby girl when she is thirty-three days old. The Japanese people thought that the mother was uncleanfor some time after childbirth and that this period was over after that time. Therefore, these are the first days a mother can visit a shrine after she has the baby. On their way to the shrine, the baby is held not by the mother but by the grandmother because the mother is not strong enough yet.
At the shrine, it is a custom to write in red ink a Chinese character meaning big, small, or dog on the forehead of the baby. In the old days, people used to write a batsu mark(×)with kitchen soot on the forehead of a baby to keep off evil, and this was called ayatsuko. This custom was taken up because people thought that the batsu mark had the power to keep away evil and that kitchen soot held the power of the house god.

during と while
during the day(日中)
during my summer vacation(夏休み中)
while I was sleeping(私が眠 っていた間に)
while my mother was out(母が外出していた間に)
during
during my stay in London.
while
while I stay in London.
while I’m in London
1.I burned my finger while I was cooking.
2.My husband got back home while I was cooking.
I burned my finger while cooking.
2の主語は、whileの前がmy husband、whileの後がIと異なるため、while節の主語+be動詞を省略できません。

Small Talk and First Time Conversations
Small talk – conversations about little things like weather and traffic – is important when meeting people for the first time.
It helps us discover if the person we are talking to is interested in us or not.
Through small talk, we can observe the other person’s body language and see if they’re having a good time.
Most people worry about what to say during their first conversations with people.
They talk about themselves because they want to appear interesting.
But the secret to good conversations is simple:
be interested in the person you are talking to.
People appreciate the attention, and it helps them relax.
Start by having small talk about the weather or the other person’s hometown.
Listen well, and show interest in their answers.
Being a good listener takes practice, so don’t hurry.
Just remember to focus on the person you are talking to, and be yourself.
These tips will help you have good conversations with anyone.

He died two years ago.
pass away(亡くなる、他界する)を用いて、
He passed away last night.
My father is already gone.
My father has already passed away.
